Fisher Island History |
The dream of creating an island
paradise took hold when developer Carl Fisher purchased the land that now bears
his name in 1919. Fisher was friends with William Kissam Vanderbilt and was
often invited to social gatherings aboard Vanderbilt's luxurious yacht named the
"Eagle" of which Fisher was more than fond.
In 1925, Vanderbilt proposed a trade
to his friend: Fisher Island for the "Eagle." Fisher gladly accepted.
William and Rosamund Vanderbilt created a splendid winter estate on this tropical
island in South Florida bound by Biscayne Bay and the blue Atlantic. Their
storied retreat was named Fisher Island, in honor of the original owner and Miami Beach pioneer
developer Carl Fisher.
Grace and
grandeur were Vanderbilt's pleasure and Fisher Island continues with the
tradition for it's members, residents and guests.
Fisher Island is a luxurious private community with the
finest residential and recreational amenities to be found anywhere.
